PRESS RELEASE 25 January 2018
Hydro Cleansing can confirm that they were prosecuted by Thames Water, in pursuant of the Water Industry Act 1991 but NOT FOR THE THEFT OF WATER as reported in Thames Waters Press Release 24 January 2018 and then sensationalised by local and National Press.
The matter was dealt with amicably and Hydro Cleansing fully complied and are fully compliant with the Water Industry Act 1991 in relation to the extraction of water from Wash Outs, using a Licensed Standpipe supplied by the approved Third Party. Though there is very little or no information available regarding the correct process for the extraction of water.
As a result of the prosecution, Hydro Cleansing paid £3000.00 in fines to Thames Water for the incorrect connection of Fire Hydrants / Wash Outs (W/O) and associated legal costs incurred by Thames Water.
All relevant procedures regarding the connection have been increased and superseded over the last 18 months despite no interjection from Thames Water or their investigation team and the appointed third party provider of licences, were unable to help with updated procedures.
Hydro Cleansing would like to put it on record that prior to the prosecution, it was not made clear the extraction of water from Hydrants is now illegal and that the correct procedures were to use a Wash Outs (W/O) with a food hygiene certificate, specialist training, anti-bacterial spray required and specialist standpipe, despite Hydro Cleansing having already purchased the relevant licensed equipment and not supplied any booklet or information at time of purchase.
At no point did Hydro Cleansing knowingly act in an illegal fashion, which was reflected in the final judgement and Hydro Cleansings solemnity to the situation.
Hydro Cleansing have requested on numerous occasions the location of available W/O’s from Thames Water and the third party who supply Standpipes on behalf of numerous Water Authorities, this information they have been unable to provide to date.
Hydro Cleansing continue to work closely with major water authorities to ensure compliance and legislation of extraction and disposal of waste from numerous streams that are maintained throughout London and the Home Counties.

Hydro Cleansing Ltd is the leaders within the industry for carrying out professional sewer services, including Fatberg removal, helping to ensure that the nations waste water infrastructures are maintained, kept environmentally cleansed and more importantly flowing. You could call us the Fatberg busters as our fully trained expert engineers, most powerful Super Combination Tankers, and in some cases, our highly sophisticated water bound drainage camera Mega Float, trawl through the grime, glug and sludge to ultimately break down and remove fatbergs found in sewers.
What is a Fatberg?
Fatbergs are large congealed lumps made up of fat compounded together by oil, grease, sanitary items, wet wipes and other waste solids, congealed to sewer walls. Fatbergs have been found to grow to the size of a wide body jumbo jet, in other words, a Boeing 747 aircraft which ultimately block major networks resulting in major damage to sewer pipes.
Having been involved in projects which have seen us remove fatbergs, there is no doubt that fatbergs have become an increasingly common problem affecting the UK’S sewer networks. With fat, oils and grease (Fogs), sanitary products and wet wipes being poured and flushed down drains and pipes, and as reported earlier this year, plastic micro beads found in shower gels, facial scrubs and tooth paste are also proving to cause problems for our drainage systems.
Can Fatbergs really be turned into Green Fuel?
While fatbergs are problematic to sewer systems, fatbergs and sewer sludge have now also been recognised as a source of bio oil fuel –
Green Fuel. With fatbergs becoming ever challenging, experts have noted to find ways to turn sludge into between 25% and 40% of bio diesel. Bio diesel has also been recounted to be 80% cleaner for the environment than regular diesel, with the expectation that water companies might be able to find a use for the thousands of tonnes of waste found deep below the ground.
