and Hydro Cleansing’s Mega-Heat…”
Continuing our twelve day countdown to Christmas, today’s blog is a nice juicy case study! However, this isn’t just any case study, this case study features blocked culverts, four foot long tree roots, over 50 TONNES of silt, and of course, an expert team of Hydro Cleansing engineers getting the job done.
Back in the Summer we were called out to deal with some blocked culverts, syphons and silt traps by the NPL. On our arrival it was clear that there was something seriously big blocking the syphon under the railway, even our camera couldn’t travel underneath to get a clear picture. Upon further investigation the engineers discovered that the blockage was clusters of tree roots growing through the tunnels. Check out the full scope of works below!

- The culvert in Normansfield Road had a high level of silt and elevated water level, the camera was then unable to return a picture of the internal condition of the pipe. We needed to remove this silt and reduce the flow during the survey, we then proposed to undertake this with a super combination unit taking one day to complete and resurvey.
- The syphon under the rail way had root ingress which prevented the passage of the camera, to remove this we needed to reduce the flow through the culvert and use high pressure root cutting with specialist root cutting nozzles suitable for large bore pipes. We took one day to complete and resurvey.
- The silt traps in five manholes needed de-silting, they contained an average of 1m of silt each. The silt traps are 2.5m in diameter which will yield approximately nine tonnes each. We took two days to complete.

We are passionate about pump station maintenance, so we’re excited to tell you about the little known marvel of engineering that is the Victorian Pump Station behind Surrey Street in Croydon.
This fresh water pump station was one of the first ever built. Baldwin Latham Engineering designed and built this innovative structure and also wrote a guide to sanitary engineering and sewer construction in London.
Victorian engineering developed at an incredible rate. The pace of development in the cities is comparable to today’s digital revolution. Some things don’t change however. The Victorian saying,
“a man should look to his drains before he furnishes his drawing room,”
is as true as ever. The need to clear drainage is as much a necessity now as it was then. Excellent installation, maintenance and repair provide peace of mind. In the Victorian era this was achieved in a very basic fashion compared to how Hydro Cleansing do it!
Safety and efficiency in confined space work are delivered beyond what Victorian engineers could imagine. Their PPE consisted of a hat and boots, today our confined space engineers are kept a lot safer! In the Victorian age, the confined space operatives would pull ploughs through the sewers to unblock them! Thankfully innovation has led to Megatron’s power to decimate blockages in hours through the simple power of high pressure water and vacuum suction. Baldwin and Latham would be amazed! Bazalgette probably saw it coming though!
Ever thought that Confined Space work was cool?
Well you were correct, of course it is. Confined Space work involves a wide range of situations; from searching for tunnels in prisons to cleaning the tanks of ferries; from the egg shaped, brick Victorian sewers to modern Super Sewers.
It involves 3-5 people on a single job: someone at the top of the drain, tank, or hole; at least one person down in the space and a third rescue person, as a backup for the person at the top. The jobs are often more complex and require more people in the spaces.
Sometimes the sewers don’t run smooth and some of Bazalgette’s sewer’s have had to be repaired with much less aesthetically pleasing pipework. We’ve been down surveying the one’s which has required this.
The Victorian structure will not have to take the full weight of London for much longer. The Tideway Super Sewer system will soon be in place and will take the load off the brick sewers.
