Whenever the word ‘hazard’ is mentioned, there is a perceived sense of fear. A hazard is believed to be any substance, material, procedure or process that has the potential to inflict harm or unfavourable health impact, to a given person under specific conditions.

Chemical substances:

Chemicals have an impact on our everyday lives, these chemicals are utilised in the manufacturing of the majority of products such as medicines, food, gasoline and electrical equipment. It is believed that up to 70, 000 chemicals are regularly utilised around the world. These chemical substances are formed naturally in the atmosphere, whilst others are either man-made or synthetic.

Hazardous Waste:

Hazardous waste are generated when chemical substances are incorrectly disposed of and this waste can pose a threat to humans, plants and animals.  Hazardous waste is also believed to be a by-product of the manufacturing process. These wastes consist of oil-based paints, pesticides, cleaning products, fluorescent light bulbs, chlorinated solvents, old batteries, metal wastes and paint thinners.


Four Core Characteristics of hazardous waste:

Hazardous waste are classified according to their dangerous properties or features. These waste are as follows:

Flammable: This type of hazardous waste can easily lead to flames. It could cause irritation to the skin, eyes and lungs. Good examples of ignitable wastes are gasoline, furniture polish and paint.

Toxic: Toxic waste are considered to be fatal when consumed. They include weed killers, pesticides and a host of other household cleaners.

Reactive: Reactive wastes are believed to be unstable under ‘standard’ conditions.  This type of hazardous waste creates poisonous gas when mixed with other chemicals.

Corrosive: Corrosive wastes are generally acids or bases with a pH that is less or equal to 2, or is greater than or equal to 12.5. Due to the high presence of acids and alkaline, the waste can easily dissolve materials they come into contact with. Acids will penetrate through metal and burn skin.

Technological advancement has enhanced our ability to treat and dispose of hazardous waste. There are regulations that govern how hazardous waste is stored, transported and disposed. Conventional methods in storing and disposing of hazardous waste comprise of surface impoundments, high-temperature incineration, deep well injection and hazardous waste landfills.
