Soakaway Cleaning and Flood Prevention
Hydro-Cleansing Ltd completed a major flood prevention task, working to clear a soakaway on the Beachwood Estate in Orpington. The job involved finding and implementing a solution to reduce the risk of flooding to the area, by Jetting and cleaning soakaway surface water pipes and chambers, along with providing a conditional CCTV report. Hydro Cleanings veteran Rainmaker Tanker and her sister tanker Megatron accompanied the job to prove once again that there is no job we cannot do!
This extensive job required night works, together with traffic management, to cleanse and jet soakaway pipes and chambers from one stretch of a major road to the other. Hydro Cleansings specialist recycling Tanker – Megatron, together with a Bulk Tanker, CCTV unit and a specialist Confined Space Team, came together as the ultimate Hydro – Cleansing Dream Team to complete the task. Our expert engineers were praised for providing the client with the best service and enthusiasm for carrying out a successful job.

Following Storm Angus, Wales and the South of England are currently being battered by high winds and even higher levels of rain fall, and as your Mother would say; prevention is better than cure! If that doesn’t inspire you to get outside and start checking your culverts and clearing your drains, then take a look at some of our flood work from previous years.
Clearing a Culvert Under the A3 Highway:
Here are some of our engineers clearing a culvert beneath the A3 on behalf of a local council. Our expert engineers were down there, in full confined space PPE to cut through the build up of silt with high pressure jets, and of course Megatron, which was on site to suck the waste away for disposal at an impressive 6000 cubic feet per minute. Megatron’s state of the art liquid ring pump creates a vacuum within the bulk tanker in order to efficiently fill it with waste, and also allows a second bulk to replace it while it disposing of the waste. This meant that the work could be continuous and we didn’t have to deploy extra vehicles which allowed us to get the job done quickly.
Flood Response at a Nursing Home in Bristol:
Saving your granny is all in a days work for our teams, or at least back in June it was. We sent out our specialist engineers in a combination vacuum tanker unit to help out a nursing home near Bristol, where the flood waters were about to reach the property. The power of our tanker meant our team could remove the water from the flooded garden area and front of the property where the flood was disrupting traffic and scaring pensioners. Job done!
So if you’re worried about flooding in your area, give us a call! Let us know where the potential flood risk is and we will call the associated council for you and arrange any necessary works. Contact us here 24/7!
The Problem: A Ditch and Two Culverts Blocked with 100 Tonnes of Silt
Our services were required to maintain the drainage system of an estate in Birdham. Two culverts and a ditch had become blocked with a dangerous level of silt.
The ditch had become over grown with tree roots and weeds. The culverts were becoming clogged with silt. The maintenance was required as part of flood prevention work in the county. The ditch ran along the side of the housing estate and was essential to their drainage in the face of a large amount of rainfall. Without this work, flooding would be a serious danger for these properties.
Following our site visit Hydro Cleansing established that the following were required to complete the job:
Three areas were blocked: a ditch 85m in length was blocked with approximately 80 tonnes of silt waste; one 450mm culvert that was 65m in length and one 450mm culvert which was 100m in length. The amount of waste in the culverts was confirmed on completion of the job as 13 tonnes. A 20,000 litre bulk tanker brought the water supply for the high pressure jetting work which was required to dislodge the silt and mud from the tree roots in the ditch. The water was also necessary to jet through the culverts. The work was completed over 5 days. The CCTV team were there for 2 days completing pre work and post work surveys.
The 2 man team worked in the ditch, jetting the silt clear of the roots, while maintaining the essential tree roots.
The powerful suction of the super combination unit at 3500CFM meant that the silt was sucked away into the waiting articulated bulk tanker. The waste was removed and disposed of each evening at Hydro Cleansing’s own wet waste disposal plant.
Hydro Cleansing’s Result
Clearing the 85m ditch, 65m and 100m culvert and removing and disposing of 100 tonnes of waste was completed on time and meant the risk of flooding was significantly reduced.
