And in case you haven’t seen it, here’s a press release published this morning about the incident from the London Fire Brigade:
Fire at Beddington sewage works
22 August 2012
Fifteen fire engines and around 75 firefighters were called to a fire in a single storey building at Beddington sewage works, near Croydon yesterday evening.
A large part of the building and its roof were damaged in the blaze and at the height of the fire a large plume of smoke meant residents living nearby were being advised to keep their doors and windows shut. The smoke has now cleared and residents can open their doors and windows again.
The Brigade was called at 1834 and the fire was under control by 0434. Fire crews from Wallington, Croydon, Norbury, Wimbledon, Tooting, Sutton, Wallington, Mitcham, New Malden, West Norwood and Addington fire stations attended the incident. Two fire engines remain at the scene damping down the fire this morning. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
Blocked drains, pump stations and sewer systems can occur for many reasons. They can become blocked due to fat / grease, cotton buds, sanitary products, baby wipes… the list is endless. The general rule is unless its human waste or toilet paper then you should bin it.
Jewellery and gadgets have been discovered as criminals use the drain and sewer system to hide stolen goods from the authorities or even dispose of them to avoid incriminating themselves. A street cleaner recently found a £21k Rolex watch, down a drain, which had been reported as stolen following a local robbery.
Cement, sand, rubble and many other building materials are often found blocking our drain and sewer system. Whether its DIY amateurs or rogue traders disposing of their waste incorrectly, it causes a devastating and sometimes irreversible effect.
Mobile phones turning up in our drain and sewer system are constantly on the increase. Whether they are dropped down the toilet is any ones guess but it’s an expensive accident. With designs becoming smaller and slimmer they still manage to get stuck and can cause major problems.
Dental floss, nappies, cat litter and cloths still manage to get flushed away despite constant campaigns and warnings about the problems they can cause. An item of underwear recently caused a blockage and the collapse of a section of road.
