Pump station maintenance
Hydro Cleansing are passionate about keeping drainage infrastructure running cleanly. From sewers to loos; from pump station maintenance to flood response, our mission is to clean it up and dispose of it safely. It’s a simple mission but one we fulfil with more creativity and innovation than anyone else!
We are passionate about pump station maintenance, so we’re excited to tell you about the little known marvel of engineering that is the Victorian Pump Station behind Surrey Street in Croydon.
This fresh water pump station was one of the first ever built. Baldwin Latham Engineering designed and built this innovative structure and also wrote a guide to sanitary engineering and sewer construction in London.
Victorian engineering developed at an incredible rate. The pace of development in the cities is comparable to today’s digital revolution. Some things don’t change however. The Victorian saying,
“a man should look to his drains before he furnishes his drawing room,”
is as true as ever. The need to clear drainage is as much a necessity now as it was then. Excellent installation, maintenance and repair provide peace of mind. In the Victorian era this was achieved in a very basic fashion compared to how Hydro Cleansing do it!
Safety and efficiency in confined space work are delivered beyond what Victorian engineers could imagine. Their PPE consisted of a hat and boots, today our confined space engineers are kept a lot safer! In the Victorian age, the confined space operatives would pull ploughs through the sewers to unblock them! Thankfully innovation has led to Megatron’s power to decimate blockages in hours through the simple power of high pressure water and vacuum suction. Baldwin and Latham would be amazed! Bazalgette probably saw it coming though!
With summer fast approaching now’s the time to schedule in those maintenance appointments you’ve been meaning to do since the start of the New Year…
Whether your require a CCTV drainage survey locating any potential blockages that may cause a nasty problem over the summer period or the hot wash of waste/bin areas with the use of Mega Heat, Hydro Cleansing are London’s finest.
Pump stations and interceptors should all be serviced regularly as well to ensure they don’t back up or overflow. This can be particularly unpleasant in the heat, experienced during the summer months.

There is estimated to be more than 5 million pump stations, across London and the South East, which collect and feed waste through the vast complex of sewers, drains, pipes and treatment plants. The average person uses 150 litres of water per day, which when multiplied by the 8 million people living in the South East of England perhaps gives some insight into the miracle beneath our feet.
Our drainage systems must be capable of handling waste water, rubbish, rain and anything else that comes its way, filtering, cleaning and ferrying the water through networks stretching miles, redelivering that clean water back to our homes whenever we turn a tap. When you consider also that London is Europe’s most densely populated metropolis, with the greatest level of growth and some of the oldest infrastructure, perhaps again you realise just how clever the utilities industry is.
The modern day miracle which is our current system has coped so well for so long but in order to ensure this continues it is vital that recognition is given to the following key issues:
- Pump stations maintenance
- Gullies and drain clearance and inspection
- Soakaway cleaning and maintenance
- Car park interceptor inspection and servicing
- Internal building drain cleaning
- Fat and grease is captured in traps which are emptied regularly, avoiding pollution
By managing our drainage infrastructure cohesively, we can:
- Mitigate the risk of floods
- Reduce pollution of our waterways
- Reduce insurance claims and rising premiums
- Prevent slips, trips, and falls
- Reduce repair costs from failed infrastructure
- Reduce the risk of loss of trade
