Day four of the Christmas countdown is upon us, and so is the latest blog instalment! Today’s blog is all about our talented CCTV team and their top of the range trenchless technology. Drain repair equipment has come a long way in the past few years. Discovering you have a cracked or damaged  pipe no longer means digging up your garden and weeks of work. Advances in technology mean that repairs can begin almost immediately with no digging or disruption. Read on for a journey of drain lining discovery!

How does it work?

When you request a drain relining service the first step is to identify the cause of damage. We will send a CCTV unit into the pipe to assess the damage and check if a drain pipe relining is feasible. When we have completed this stage and agreed a drain relining is the best option, our team will start work!

What does it involve?

We will use one of our state of the art jet vac tankers to clean and remove any blockages within the drain or sewer pipe. This is to ensure the pipe has a good clean surface for the resin to bond to. We then insert a deflated packer (also known as a bladder) within the drain, pushing it through to the damaged area.  Once we have confirmed we are covering the damaged part of the drain with the drain relining patch, the packer (bladder) will then be inflated.

This will force the drain relining to bond with and secure itself to the inside of the drain or sewer pipe. Once dried, this makes a completely secure, leak-proof seal. Once we have removed the packer our team will then re-insert the CCTV unit into the newly repaired pipe to make sure that the resin has cured and there are no leaks. Drain relining can patch drain pipes from as little as 100mm diameter up to 1.5 metres and is a permanent solution.

Continuing our twelve day countdown to Christmas, today’s blog is a nice juicy case study! However, this isn’t just any case study, this case study features blocked culverts, four foot long tree roots, over 50 TONNES of silt, and of course, an expert team of Hydro Cleansing engineers getting the job done. 

Back in the Summer we were called out to deal with some blocked culverts, syphons and silt traps by the NPL. On our arrival it was clear that there was something seriously big blocking the syphon under the railway, even our camera couldn’t travel underneath to get a clear picture. Upon further investigation the engineers discovered that the blockage was clusters of tree roots growing through the tunnels. Check out the full scope of works below!

  1. The culvert in Normansfield Road had a high level of silt and elevated water level, the camera was then unable to return a picture of the internal condition of the pipe. We needed to remove this silt and reduce the flow during the survey, we then proposed to undertake this with a super combination unit taking one day to complete and resurvey.
  1. The syphon under the rail way had root ingress which prevented the passage of the camera, to remove this we needed to reduce the flow through the culvert and use high pressure root cutting with specialist root cutting nozzles suitable for large bore pipes. We took one day to complete and resurvey.
  1. The silt traps in five manholes needed de-silting, they contained an average of 1m of silt each. The silt traps are 2.5m in diameter which will yield approximately nine tonnes each. We took two days to complete.

Amazing Sewer Cleaning from Hydro Cleansing!

Sewer cleaning is something Hydro Cleansing are the go to guys for. Cleaning a London mainline sewer requires some complex logistics and expert engineers. From cranes, to penstocks, to 500m of jetting hose, this one required a specialist approach.

The sewer had to be cleared of silt in order to allow an inspection of the sewer to take place. The line was 20% full of waste and a risk assessment had established that the risk was significant enough to require all of the silt to be removed before the inspection was undertaken.

The sewer water was diverted by lowering the penstock which sent the flow of water through an alternative sewer. This penstock didn’t keep all of the water out and so the remaining storm water had to be continuously pumped away from the chamber where the engineers were working. This was 45m deep! A crane was supplied by the client to lower in the pumps and hoses.

From there our engineers could remove the silt and MEGATRON, the largest vacuum tanker in Europe, vacuumed it up the 45m into bulk tankers for disposal. MEGA REEL, the longest jetting reel available at 500m allowed the confined space engineers to jet as far into the sewer as they were required to. This loosened the silt and meant it could be sucked up the hoses at astounding speed!

The sewer cleaning was carried out during the night as the flow of waste water is lower. Without the awesome power of Megatron, the specialist hose of Mega Reel of the expertise and commitment of our engineers, this job would have taken weeks. It was completed in a few nights!
